Thinking of Getting Winter Tires?

Thinking of Getting Winter Tires?

The cold weather is upon us and we’ve got TIRES on the brain! Winter driving season is here and you may be considering the same question you ask yourself every year: Should I store my all-season tires and invest in winter tires? The long and the short of it: YES. You may not realize that winter tires and all-season tires are actually made of very different rubber compounds. The rubber in all-season tires hardens when the temperature drops below 7 degrees Celsius which results in ineffective traction for the tires. Keep in mind that if your wheels lock up due to insufficient traction, braking and steering are severely compromised. For example, your brakes will be working that much harder to make up for the poor grip from your tires. Winter tires are made from a compound that will maintain their traction in temperatures that fall as much as -45 degrees Celsius. The result? Shorter stopping distances an ... read more

Why You Shouldn’t Buy A Low Mileage Car

Why You Shouldn’t Buy A Low Mileage Car

When searching for a used car, many people look at the mileage and think that low mileage means a better purchase. After all, the less a car has been driven, the less wear and tear, right? This can be the case, but more important questions to ask are how and where the car was driven. There are many advantages to a newer, higher mileage car including: Less wear and tear on components Suspension components: Highways tend to have less potholes, dips and bumps, compared to city roads. Brake components: You’re typically not required to use the brakes as often on the highway as city driving (e.g. stop-and-go traffic). Less load on the engine The engine works hardest when you want to move from a stopped position. Once in motion, the engine works less to keep the vehicle going. Less contamination of emission contro ... read more

Arts and Craft Time: A Real Piston Cup!

Arts and Craft Time: A Real Piston Cup!

Having a mom (or dad) with an auto repair shop has its benefits. My two boys (ages 4 & 6) love playing with cars and we’ve had many pieces broken off their toy cars. They’d come running to me because they knew I fix cars at work, wanting me to repair their toys. Try explaining that it’s difficult repairing plastic! Poor Guido got the vice treatment when one of his forks broke: Sad to say but even our heavy duty glue couldn’t keep Guido in one piece beyond a few weeks. When it came time for my on’s 5th birthday a few years ago, I wanted to give him something really special. So I asked my lead tech at the time, Jay, if he could fabricate our own version of the Piston Cup from Disney’s Cars. Never one to turn down a challenge, Jay agreed to make the Piston Cup and even designed the podium so we could place Lightning McQueen and the rest of the gang on it. It was good timing as we had an engine lying around from an replacement we did for a client’s Suzuki Aerio ... read more

New Brakes? Avoid Premature Brakewear

New Brakes? Avoid Premature Brakewear

Did you know there’s a proper way to wear in new brake pads and rotors? I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to wear in your new brake materials properly-especially pads and rotors. Too much heat is a big problem for your car, and a lot of it is produced when you brake. Overheating in brakes causes many issues, including ineffective braking (it may take longer to come to a complete stop or you’ll need to push harder on the brake pedal) and pulsation in brakes (due to warped rotors). If you want clarification on brake terminology, check out the image we posted on the Yummy Mummy Club website. Here are a few guidelines when it comes to wearing in your new brakes: Generally speaking, the break-in period for new brake pads is 300kms. ... read more

Help Your Mechanic Help You

Help Your Mechanic Help You

From our side of the counter, there are a few things that go a long way in helping us reduce wasted time when it comes to working on your car. Below is a list of some suggestions and things to keep in mind the next time you bring your car in for service. Granted, there are ways around some of the items (e.g. if the owner’s manual isn’t available, we have access to most information on fluid specifications through our service manuals) so it’s not that we can’t service your car without your full participation of this list. These are suggestions—friendly requests, really. – At least half tank of fuel—we know you’re rushing to get to one appointment after another but I can’t stress this one enough. Almost always we need to road test the car, before and after repairs, and sometimes we need to run the car in the shop for an extended period of time (i.e., coolant fluid service, diagnosing engine idling issues, etc.) – Ownership & proof of ins ... read more

Staying Fit On The Road

Staying Fit On The Road

On some days it feels like I spend more time in the car than I do outside. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t have proper posture (I couldn’t make it as an English guardsman) and sitting for long periods in the car doesn’t help. After a day of contorting my body under dashboards, lifting tires and reaching over engines to get at spark plugs, my body needs to keep up with my energetic kids. Here are some exercises my chiropractor, Dr. Mae Chan of Advanced Health Centre, suggested for me to keep strain & fatigue at bay. You can do these while waiting at a traffic light, waiting to pick up your kids from school or waiting for your girlfriend who’s running late for your lunch date! Holding the steering wheel in the 10 and 2 o’clock positions, roll your shoulders forward and backwards. Repeat several times. Hold one arm out in front of you, palm down. Grasp fingers with opposite hand and gen ... read more
