Why Do You Need A Wheel Alignment?

Why Do You Need A Wheel Alignment?

Picture yourself coming down one of the many beautiful ski slopes Ontario has to offer. Now picture yourself again, only this time with your skis pointing a few degrees inward or outward. Even those few degrees of variation will put a lot of additional stress on your ankles, knees and calves. Yes, you will still enjoy the experience but may not have the easiest time in the hours following, as the aches and pains begin to creep in. It’s the same thing with the wheel alignment for your car. The good news is that it’s a condition you can easily stay in control over with regular maintenance and checks for your vehicle. Even when your wheels are one degree or two out of alignment, this can have quite a significant impact on different parts and components of your car. You may find yourself paying for repair and replacement of components that should have lasted longer, bu ... read more

When is the Right Time for All-Season Tire Change?

When is the Right Time for All-Season Tire Change?

The cold weather has finally passed, the sun is shining, and spring blooms will be out before you know it! It’s time to get those winter tires off and make the most of the great outdoors this summer. With warmer temperatures fast approaching, it is important to remember that leaving your winter tires on for too long puts you at risk on the roads. Many of us make the mistake of booking our all-season tire change too early or too late. Because of the constant temperature changes in our Canadian weather, it can be difficult to determine the right time. While there is no set date for when to book your tire changeover, the ideal time would be when the temperature is consistently hovering over 7 degrees Celsius. This will ensure your winter tires aren’t being used during hot weather which will compromise their rubber chemical compounds and your driving safety. What Your Teen Really Thinks About Your Driving

What Your Teen Really Thinks About Your Driving

A study released by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) and Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. found that parents who engaged in distracted driving behaviours had teenagers who modeled the same behaviour. Dr. Ray Bingham, head of UMTRI’s Young Driver Behaviour and Injury Prevention Group says, “[p]arents should know that every time they get behind the wheel with their child in the car they are providing a visible example that their child is likely to follow.” An interesting find from the study is that teens who think that their parents were engaged in distracted driving behaviours were more likely to engage in those behaviours themselves. For example, if parents reported looking for something in the vehicle while driving, their teen was twice as likely to do the same. However, if the teen thinks that their parents were looking for something in the car while driving, they were 4 times more likely to do ... read more

Questions To Ask Your Mechanic

Questions To Ask Your Mechanic

“What would you do if this was your car?” That’s a question we get asked a lot and to be honest, it’s not really a fair question. Don’t ask your mechanic what he or she would do in terms of repairing your car. There are so many variables that make you—you have different needs for your vehicle, it’s probably more inconvenient for you to make a trip to visit your mechanic, etc. Here are some questions to ask yourself when it comes to auto maintenance: Is this a safety issue? If your vehicle needs to be repaired because of a safety issue, there’s no question about it—you need to fix it. It’s amazing how much work people put off thinking that as they can drive the car then it’s fine. The reality is that you are compromising yourself… if that doesn’t bother you because you feel you’re a safe driver, then remember that you’re putting others on the road at risk too. What is your purpose for the car? ... read more

Gen Y Prefers iPhone Over Car

Gen Y Prefers iPhone Over Car

I spoke with two of my clients whose teenagers didn’t seem interested in getting their driver’s licenses. Really? When I was 15, I couldn’t wait to get my driver’s license. I wrote my driver’s test the day I turned 16. For these two separate clients, the concern was that their teenagers were limited in getting jobs. Both of these clients had driven their teens to job interviews because the commute by transit was incredibly long. It was widely reported in 2012 that the auto industry is concerned with declining auto sales amongst 18-to-34-year-olds. Industry experts believe that Gen Y connect online so there isn’t as much need to connect in person. Apparently cars are not the only symbols of freedom and technology has become a great competitor. Consider this from the Business Week article: “For most Gen Y buyers…skipping a vehicle purchase is pre ... read more

Cars For Kids 101

Cars For Kids 101

I stumbled across GM Education, a website by General Motors that educates kids (and grown-ups) about different aspects of cars. It’s pretty cool and is easily laid out. Why not teach your kids a few things about cars over the holiday break? Here are some of my favourite things from the site: Grades K–4 This is a wide age range, so use your discretion when searching for age-appropriate activities. Interactive game, Cruncha, shows which car parts are recycled and what they could be made into. Build an edible car with graham crackers, dried fruit, marshmallows . . . mmm, marshmallows. Energy section has Technology In Your House, and is an interactive game to get kids thinking about the different types of energy consumed at home—your car ... read more

Ignition Key: When To Let Go

Ignition Key: When To Let Go

Have you ever been to an event and as soon as someone finds out what occupation you’re in, they ask you for your advice on related things? Doctors get asked questions about ailments, IT techs answer questions about computer problems, etc. It’s no different for us as technicians. Usually they’re questions about a noise or problem with the car. One time, I was at a networking event and chatted with a girl who worked in IT. She was a new driver and I asked about her driving experience. She mentioned overall it was good, but she didn’t know when to let go of the ignition key when she turned her dad’s car on. Our chat was something like this: Me: Pardon? Her: After the car turns on, how do you know when to let go of the key? She explained that her driving school instructor had a push button start car so she never used a physical key… until she got in her dad’s car. She turned the key forward to start the car but ... read more

2015 Hyundai Sonata Sport

2015 Hyundai Sonata Sport

Model Tested: 2015 Hyundai Sonata Sport 2.0 Turbo (Sedan) 2.0 Turbo GDI Engine 6-Speed Automatic Transmission Seating Capacity: 5 Road Test Terrain: 80% city 20% highway During our road test of the all-new Sonata, we received the press release that the Hyundai Genesis and Sonata won the GOOD DESIGN™ Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. And we were not surprised! Hyundai in general, but specifically the Sonata has come a long way from 10 years, and even 5 years ago. The look has changed from just another sedan to a sporty, sleek design. We were excited to get this on the road, especially with that extra turbo boost. How do we say no to Turbo, right? Exterior Design The Sonata was an all around great vehicle – we loved the sporty look and couldn’t get enough of it. We found ourselves giving the Sonata a second and third look. This model came e ... read more
